What is the Heart Gallery?

The Heart Gallery is a collaborative initiative that uses powerful photography to tell the stories of children in the foster care system who are waiting to be adopted. By capturing the individuality, spirit, and interests of each child, the Heart Gallery aims to connect these children with prospective adoptive families and community networks. The galleries typically feature portraits of children, along with personal narratives that highlight their unique qualities and needs. This approach helps raise awareness about the challenges faced by children in foster care and promotes adoption by showcasing their potential and personalities. Heart Galleries operate in various regions, often in partnership with local organizations and community members, to foster a sense of connection and encourage positive permanency for children in the system. Since their inception, many children featured in Heart Galleries have successfully found loving, permanent homes.

How many Heart Galleries are there?

The Heart Gallery operates in 11 regions across Texas, as defined by the Department of Family and Protective Services (DFPS). Each region features its own Heart Gallery, showcasing children in the foster care system who are awaiting adoption. This initiative aims to connect these children with prospective families and raise awareness about their unique stories and needs. The goal is to ensure that every child in Texas has the opportunity to find a loving, permanent home.

Where did the Heart Gallery funding come from?

The funding for the expansion of Heart Galleries of Texas comes from a partnership with the University of Texas, specifically the Steve Hicks School of Social Work and the Moritz Center for Societal Impact. Through this collaboration, the initiative received $12 million during the 88th Legislative Session to support the expansion of the Heart Galleries and associated Post-Adopt services. This funding aims to enhance the efforts to connect children in the foster care system with loving, permanent families across Texas.

Where can the Heart Gallery be Displayed?

The Heart Gallery can be displayed in various venues that are accessible to the public and can effectively showcase the children’s photographs and stories. Common locations include: Art Galleries: Traditional art spaces that can host exhibitions. Community Centers: Local centers that serve families and provide space for community events. Libraries: Public libraries often have exhibit space and are frequented by families. Schools: Partnering with local schools to display the gallery can help engage students and families. Museums: Art and cultural museums may have programs focused on community outreach. Shopping Malls: High-traffic areas can help reach a larger audience. Government Buildings: Local government offices and courthouses can serve as venues to raise awareness. Online Platforms: Virtual galleries on websites and social media can broaden the reach beyond physical locations. These venues provide opportunities to engage the community, raise awareness about the needs of children in foster care, and promote adoption.

Do the children and youth featured in the Heart Gallery know about the galleries?

Yes, the children and youth featured in the Heart Gallery are informed about the galleries and their participation. They are involved in the process, including the photography sessions and the development of their stories. All featured children have given their consent and are excited about the possibility of being adopted. This engagement helps ensure that their narratives are authentic and reflect their individuality. The goal of the Heart Gallery is not only to showcase these children but also to empower them by giving them a voice in how they are represented. The excitement and hope for a loving, permanent home are important aspects of their participation. However, the level of awareness and understanding may vary depending on the child's age and circumstances, so sensitive communication is essential throughout the process.

Why do some photos have more than 1 child/youth?

Some photos in the Heart Gallery feature more than one child or youth to highlight sibling groups. Promoting Sibling Adoption: Many siblings in foster care wish to stay together when being adopted. Featuring them together can encourage families to consider adopting sibling groups, helping maintain these important familial bonds.

Why are there no babies featured?

The Heart Gallery primarily focuses on children and youth who are harder to adopt, specifically sibling groups, teenagers, and those who are medically fragile. This emphasis is important because these groups often face greater challenges in finding permanent homes compared to younger children. By highlighting their unique stories and needs, the Heart Gallery aims to raise awareness and encourage families to consider adopting older children and those with special needs, ultimately ensuring that every child has the opportunity for a loving, permanent home.

What is PMC?

Permanency Managed Care (PMC) is a service model designed to support children in the foster care system and facilitate their transition to stable, permanent placements. The primary goal of PMC is to ensure that children achieve permanency—whether through adoption, guardianship, or reunification with their birth families—while receiving the necessary resources and support throughout the process.

What are Post-Adopt/PMC Services?

Our Post-Adopt Services focus on three key areas: mental health support, family connections, and respite care. We provide access to mental health professionals who specialize in adoption-related issues, ensuring families have the resources to navigate challenges and foster healthy relationships. Additionally, we facilitate family connections through support groups and community events, allowing adoptive families to share experiences and build lasting relationships with others in similar situations. Lastly, we offer respite care to give families a much-needed break, allowing parents to recharge while ensuring their children are cared for in a safe and supportive environment. Together, these services aim to promote the well-being and stability of adoptive families.

What do Post-Adopt/PMC Services Cost?

All of our Post-Adopt Services are provided at no cost to families. We believe that every family should have access to the resources they need to thrive after adoption, which is why we ensure that mental health support, family connection opportunities, and respite care are available free of charge. Our commitment is to remove financial barriers, allowing families to focus on building healthy, lasting relationships and fostering a nurturing environment for their children.

What is the difference between Foster Angels of South Texas & the Heart Gallery?

The Heart Gallery primarily focuses on raising awareness about children in foster care who are waiting to be adopted, using powerful photography and storytelling to highlight their individuality and unique needs. In South Texas, the Heart Gallery operates as one of the many programs of Foster Angels, which is dedicated to providing support and resources directly to children currently in foster care. While the Heart Gallery emphasizes the importance of connecting these children with prospective adoptive families, Foster Angels enhances the lives of children in the system by providing essential items, experiences, and opportunities. Together, these programs aim to improve outcomes for children in foster care, both through promoting adoption and supporting those still in the system.
